LEED FAQ
How do LEED rating systems work?
To achieve certification, LEED Green Build Rating Systems™require earning a minimum number of points in various credits. Credits consist of various requirements in five areas of environmental concern:
1. Environmental impact on building site and ability to sustain minimal impact
2. Water use efficiency
3. Energy efficiency
4. Efficient use of building materials and other construction resources
5. Indoor environmental quality (aka IEQ, EQ, indoor air quality, IAQ)
LEED rewards projects that earn points above the minimum certification level. The more points, the higher the certification level:
1. LEED Certified, the minimum LEED certification level possible
2. LEED Silver
3. LEED Gold
4. LEED Platinum, the highest LEED certification level possible
What role do adhesives play in LEED projects?
It is in Indoor Environmental Quality credits where adhesives have the greatest impact on LEED. A point can be earned for EQ Credit 4.1: Low Emitting Materials: Adhesives & Sealants, but only if all adhesives and sealants applied on site within the building’s weatherproof system comply with SCAQMD’s (South Coast Air Quality Management District in California) Rule 1168.
